Thorens TD 203 Review
A new Thorens Turntable, the Thorens TD-203 Turntable is a good turntable that is really easy to operate. It is designed in such a way that newbies will find it so easy to use it. The controls are made simple, and the whole turntable comes as a whole, hence you wouldn’t need to adjust it at all. Each of the parts that make up the whole turntable is durable and hardy, hence it will be pretty tough for anyone to accidentally damage it.
But apart from this, just how good is it, and what are the features of the Thorens TD 203?
Features
The Thorens TD 203 uses a TP-82 tonearm which has a Thorens TAS 257 moving magnet cartridge. This combination ensures that the alignment of the tonearm itself is immaculate. The installation of the cartridge is easy too, as you will just need to fit the bias weight and it can be operational. There are two counterweights at the rear of the arm. The lighter counterweight is for minute adjustments, while of course, the larger one is more some significant movement. With this, you can be assured that the stylus will be able to have a smooth and accurate connection with the vinyl record.
Indeed, the Thorens TD 203 is a fully manual turntable. Before you go about assuming that manual turntables are tough to use for newbies, you are actually wrong here. Since it is a manual turntable, it actually allows the user to have full control over the turntable in terms of starting and stopping the audio device itself. What’s more, the design of the tonearm is such that you actually do not need to make any adjustment to it at all. The unipivot design will be adaptable to the changes, hence not needing any human intervention at all.
The heavy platter itself is made of an antiresonance material, hence you can be assured that there will not be any wobbling of the disc itself.
Sound Quality
The sound quality is surprisingly clean and smooth. When playing classical pieces, you will be able to discern out the various sections that are in the piece. The intonation and clarity of sound is magnificent. However, there might be a slight issue when it comes to playing records that are slightly bassy in nature, but that shouldn’t be a concern if you intend to pair it with a preamp.
Aesthetics
With a white body as well as silver tonearm, the design itself is hardly vintage. But, it does fit into the decor of most homes due to the turntable sleek design. Being a good entry level turntable, your neighbors or friends will hardly notice that the Thorens TD 203 simple design is actually met for newbies.
The Thorens TD203 is available in three different colors for you to choose from.
Design and Build Quality
Indeed, as mentioned, the Thorens TD 203 is a beautifully crafted turntable with a sleek and modern design. It features a glossy black finish and comes with a sturdy aluminum platter. The plinth, which is the base of the turntable, is made of high-quality MDF and features four adjustable feet for stability. The tonearm is made of carbon fiber and is equipped with an anti-skating mechanism to ensure accurate tracking of the record.
The turntable is easy to set up and comes with a clear instruction manual. The tonearm is pre-mounted and calibrated at the factory, so all you have to do is attach the platter and counterweight, and you’re good to go.
